Greg’s book, Hurdles, is out this week. Published on October 13, 2022 by Smyth-Helwys, it is a collection of his essays about how we can better traverse the obstacle in our lives.

New book coming in 2022: The Hurdles

Greg has a new book coming out in 2022 called The Hurdles, published by Smyth-Helwys.

We’re often told that life’s more a marathon than a sprint, but as we’re emerging from the pandemic yet still find formidable challenges ahead, perhaps it’s most useful to think of ourselves not merely as runners, but as hurdlers. Greg Funderburk’s upcoming book, The Hurdles, endeavors to reframe the obstacles we face with both a Gospel mindset and a dose of Stoic philosophy. He’ll suggest the hurdles we face in our lives aren’t incidental to the race. They are the race. Rather than losing heart as we come to them— we’ll be asked, what if we use them to locate within ourselves a reliable rhythm and a more durable balance to gain a spiritual momentum as the race goes on? What if we look at the difficulties we face not as detours or irritations, but as formative to who we might become? What if we begin to think of our lives not as we might wish they were— long straightaways free of trials, pain and demanding exertions— but as they actually are. It’s in these hurdles that we cultivate strength and beauty in our personalities, craft virtue, and discover opportunities to offer grace to one another. We’re hurdlers.

New Interview with Greg about “Let It Be Said, We’ve Borne It Well”

Smyth-Helwys interviews Greg about his book, Let It Be Said, We’ve Borne It Well: “With just a reframing in our thinking, we can consider where we are, not with the perspective of the darkness of any present moment, but pull back with a wider lens. We can rather miraculously shift our thinking backward to a moment of joy from which we extract strength, or forward in time to a future in which we can plausibly believe that we’ve overcome our current challenges.”

The Mourning Wave Named One of Kirkus Reviews’ Best Books of 2020

Kirkus Reviews publishes a Best Books List each year and selected The Mourning Wave as one of the best books in their Indie category for 2020. The book was also mentioned in the short article introducing the list:

“The standout Indie genre of 2020…was historical fiction, particularly novels about the ways people contended with the troubles of their own eras. Here are a few of the year’s best…Gregory Funderburk writes about the Great Storm of 1900, considered to be the greatest U.S. natural disaster, in The Mourning Wave. Our reviewer says, “While the story is harrowing, it is shot through with striking, well-earned moments of grace and compassion—even humor; a woman doling out food calls it ‘Don’t Ask Stew.’ ”

New Book Coming Soon

Let It Be Said, They Bore It Well is a series of short encouragements that each take on the form of a thought experiment which asks this of us all: Will we be able to look back at the challenge of the pandemic, as well as other trials we will inevitably face in our lives, and say that we rose to the occasion.

Each essay asks, how can we better persevere with both faith and courage, utilize our time prudently, and develop additional personal grit and grace while forbearing one another’s faults during this season.

The book recognizes that to answer in the affirmative rests ultimately on our connections with God and with each other, and provides inspiration and practical guidance for not only pressing on, but for using the headwinds pushing against us, to lift ourselves into new adventures and and land in new and better places.

Let It Be Said, They Bore It Well will be available later this Fall.
